Joint Injections / Aspirations

Using fluoroscopic imaging, the radiologist can sample fluid from joints to send for analysis to help determine the cause of joint pain and swelling. A local anesthetic and steroid can also be instilled into the joint to provide pain relief and to help diagnose the source of a patient’s symptoms. Your physician may order this procedure for hips, knees, ankles, elbows, shoulders, wrists and several other joints.

Pain relief is variable and depends on the source of the pain, the underlying conditions that contribute to the pain, ongoing activity and disease processes, as well as an individual’s response to the steroid.

Activity should be limited for 24 hours following the procedure.
